The Import Building

The ten-storey office building is made entirely of cross-laminated timber (CLT) and glued laminated timber (GLT) and is a prime example of sustainability, quality and speed in timber engineering.
WIEHAG was responsible for engineering, production, logistics and assembly of the timber support structure.
Task

Turn old into new

The task for Studio RHE was to transform a dreary civil servants’ fortress from the 1980s into a hip shared office location.

Implementation

Reach for the sky with timber

For this purpose, a 10-storey wooden structure was erected around the inner courtyard to create additional space for offices and cafés. The biggest challenge for WIEHAG was the existing glass roof, which meant that building cranes were not possible and the components had to be erected in an ancient manner with pulleys and trolleys.

The Import Building as best practice in timber engineering

Skip slider
The Import Building
Sustainability
Wood used in construction stores CO2 for the long term and can be converted back into energy when the buildings are dismantled.
The Import Building
Quality
The combination of modern GLT and CLT construction methods meets the highest aesthetic demands.
The Import Building
Speed
Maximum factory prefabrication of all components enabled fast assembly.
