Project description

At the end of March 2014, after a construction period of just six months, WIEHAG completed the construction of the timber roof structure of the new Crossrail station in Canary Wharf, London. The station at Canary Wharf, as well as the entire crossrail line, is expected to be completed in 2018.
In the centre of London's business district, Canary Wharf, nestled between skyscrapers in a dock of the Thames, WIEHAG has built an icon of timber building culture. A milestone in timber architecture for a sustainable way of thinking, integrating timber materials into urban development. A milestone for both engineered timber construction and WIEHAG, who carried out the planning, structural design and construction of the roof framework.
Ending in March, during a typically short construction period of just six months, individual prefabricated elements were assembled to form the 300 metre long roof structure. 1000 cubic metres of PEFC certified timber from local, sustainably managed forests were processed into 1414 timber beams in a state-of-the-art production plant in Altheim, Upper Austria.

I look forward to the day when I can show my grandchildren the spectacular architecture," remarks Daniel Nieberle, WIEHAG project manager for one of the largest building sites in Europe and currently the largest timber structure in the United Kingdom.
Construction phase: Installation of ETFE cushions
The ETFE cushions within the timber roof frame, which provide plenty of light, are currently being installed by the company Seele Austria, also from Upper Austria. Norman Foster and his architectural practice Foster + Partners in London are the architects of this aesthetic highlight in the heart of the pulsing metropolis. In addition to four levels below water level and two above it, an impressive landscape garden on the uppermost deck is to be built in the next year, along with shops and restaurants.
This Crossrail station roof structure is proof that timber, a CO2 neutral raw material, continues to fascinate anew as a symbol of ecological and aesthetic awareness.

Construction details
1414 individual timber beams, 4 of which are curved; 72 steel beams; 564 steel nodes of which 86 connect to the reinforced concrete structure; 2 double curved ring-beams at the roof cantilever edges to the east and west.

Timetable and budget of the Crossrail railway line
Construction of the 100 km long railway line from Maidenhead to Shenfield & Abbey Wood began in May 2007. The opening of the entire Crossrail infrastructure project, including the station at Canary Wharf, should take place in 2018.The budget is estimated at approximately 18 billion Euros. The budget for the Canary Wharf section itself is over 600 million Euros. The railway line shall connect Heathrow Airport with the east of London et al.
